Bastion Cairoli • Walls of Lucca

map of the walls of lucca bastion cairoli

Lucca' historical centre is enclosed behind a wall system. The walls, made of small red bricks, were built as a defence against the enemy like Florence, but were never tested in war so they have remained intact. As the walls lost their military importance, they became a pedestrian promenade which encircled the old town, although they were used for a number of years in the 20th century for racing cars; today citizens and visitors love to walk, cycle or jog on the wide road which runs along the top of the walls, shaded by chestnut trees. From here you can look into the old town and see the wonderful buildings of the center and share a little of the private life of the citizens, on their terraces and in their backyards; or you can look outwards to the beautiful hills and the Apuan Alps which surround the town.
