Church of Santa Caterina • Lucca

map of the church of santa caterina in lucca

Founded in 1575, annexed to a convent of “ Terziarie domenicane”, the Church of Santa Caterina was radically restructured at the beginning of the 1738. The old Church of the Sisters of Santa Caterina was demolished and replaced by a new one on a design of the noble architect Francesco Pini, student of the Juvarra; this new Church was consecrated in 1748 and was dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena.

The aspect of this baroque building is unique in the ecclesiastical architecture of Lucca for its corner position between via Vittorio Emanuele and via del Crocefisso. Inside the Church is characterized by a unique space with an elliptical plan; the entrance of this beautiful Church is situated along the minor axis. Above the altar there are two marble statues by Giovanni Cybei and Giovanni Lazzaroni representing the Carità (Charity) and the Purezza (Purity); originally they framed a canvas with the Estasi di Santa Caterina by Pompeo Batoni now preserved in the National Museum of Palazzo Mansi, replaced by the Madonna col bambino and Sant' Antonio da Padova by Giuseppe Bertini.

The upper part of the Church is characterized by a dome without completely frescoed by “Quadrature” made by the lucchese painter Bartolomei de Santi and by Lorenzo Castellotti.

The Church is located opposite the disused Manifattura Tabacchi (Tobacco Factory) where generations of “sigaraie” have worked for the production of the famous Toscano. (a typical cigar)
