Pinewood along Baratti Gulf

map of the baratti gulf

The Gulf of Baratti is situated in the municipality of Piombino in the province of Leghorn. The name of the Gulf derives from a little town (Baratti) rich of Etruscan tumulus such as the necropolis of Populonia.

The Gulf is delimited to the north by the promontories of Poggio San Leonardo and to the south from the one of Piombino dominated by the historical centre of Populonia. The sands along the coast have a golden colour thanks to the presence of iron. The pinewoods in these areas are characterized by “Pini Marittimi” and ”Domestici”. Baratti is part of the Archeological Park of Baratti and Populonia one of the most important of the Val di Cornia. Near the port we can admire the old Tower of Baratti.
