Rosignano Marittimo Virtual Tour

The name of Rosignano derives from the Roman family gens Rasinia who owned some lands in this area. The adjective "Marittimo" was added in 1862 to distinguish this village from Rosignano Monferrato in the province of Alessandria. The first written document about a settlement on the hill of Rosignano dates back to 762 AD the Longobard era. In the tenth century Rosignano passed to the Marchesato di Toscana and then to Pisa. In 1406 the Florentine domination followed that of Pisa, and it was so overwhelming that, in 1431, led to the rebellion of Rosignano and other neighboring Villages and their union, even if for only two years, the Duchy of Milan. In 1509 Rosignano passed into the hands of the Florentines. Between the second half of the 800 and early 900 Rosignano acquired an important place in the history of political movements for the presence of Pietro Gori, poet, writer and anarchist lawyer. The allocation to the province of Leghorn dates back to 1925.

The municipality of Rosignano Marittimo contains the following villages: Vada, Castiglioncello, Rosignano Solvay, Castelnuovo della Misericordia, Gabbro, and Nibbiaia.
