Sardinia Virtual Tour

The Sardinia has very ancient origins: the first evidences of the human presence (Homo erectus) are primitive flints, found in the zone of Sassari, dating from a period between 500,000 and 100,000 years ago. From the 1500 to 500 b.C. the Region is characterized by the mysterious Nuragic Civilization that leaves us a lot of evidences of its existence with more than 7,000 Nuraghe. The Phoenicians called this island Hyknusa or Sandlyon while the Latins called it Sardinia.

After the fall of the Roman Empire the region was occupied by the Vandals until the advent of the Byzantines in 534 AD. The decline of the Byzantine Empire gave the Sardinians a new political order with the kingdoms (Giudicati).

In 1297 began the Kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica which ended in 1847 after many vicissitudes, and in 1861 the Sardinia became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

With the Italian Constitution of 1948 is attributed to the Sardinian region a Special Status providing more autonomy to the sardinian institutions: the island has an ancient culture with unique ethnic and linguistic elements. Its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea has fostered trade and cultural relations but left the island exposed to a succession of dominations who did not prevent the Sardinians to maintain their traditions and their historical identity.
