Siena Virtual Tour

The passage from one Tuscan province to another is visible from the changing of the landscape. The morphology of Tuscany is, in fact, very varied: from the Tyrrhenian Coast, to the Apuan Alps, with its famous marble quarries, to the gentle hills, to the flow of rivers.
But the "terra senese" has a unique and particular image; the colours and spaces change and become yellow ocher for the presence of wheat and sunflowers , or green thanks to the metalliferous hills; then we find a barren landscape due to the Crete Senesi, a sort of continuous sculptures of modern art modeled by nature and time. The space is suddenly broken by soaring towers of the ancient towns or by a lonely old Romanesque Church, and so the Story takes precedence over nature maintaining the beauty and the elegance.
Monteriggioni is visible from afar like a crown of Walls from which emerged the 14 towers that seem to guard the valley below.
San Gimignano dominates the Elsa Valley, and is recognized by its massive towers that create an attractive vision, a source of inspiration for numerous poets.
In the town of Chiusdino, in a vast plain, once a marsh at the foot of the little hill of Montesiepi, rises the majestic complex of San Galgano, of which remain only ruins, but capable of causing a profound suggestion in the visitor.
Pienza is another jewel in the countryside in the province of Siena and dominates from a hilltop the barren Valle d'Orcia. It is particular for its architecture and its birth: the town was, in fact, planned by Pope Pius II, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who built it as an "ideal city" near his birthplace.
Siena was named Sena by the Romans because Senae in latin means union of villages that form a single city and so it still shows the visitor today: a single city and its "contrade".
